I would so get my arse kicked for saying this in the streets of my town, but I really wish Club Day was a little more American - a little more hopeful and fun… Less… I don’t know.

P6140010.JPGIt felt robotic this year (as opposed to odd last year and hot in 2006) The dresses were lovely, the bands played on, people walked, queens were crowned, raffle tickets were bought and yes photos were taken . But there was no excitement, no real spirit about it (other than the copious amounts being drunk in the pubs.
And we have no idea if there will be one next year as ‘interest is waning as the cost rises’. Maybe if there was something to be excited about?

P6140143.JPGWesham holds a big event in the afternoon that seems to get the people in.

We have a crowning of the Rose Queen in church and then… that’s it.

Once the morning parade is over unless you want to view the flower displays in church you have either drinking (which causes so much trouble we have police riot vans in town prepared every year) or the “Fun” Fair which is hugely expensive and about as much fun as… something not fun.

At least it’ll be gone in a couple of days and then the ambient level of noise will drop dramatically and the ‘Rec’ (small park)’s grass can start to recover again.

Maybe it felt odd because I was the only one in my family attending events this year. The brother was at work, Dad was on the allotment and Mum was spending all day travelling to see Granny…

My dear Granny is currently in hospital (this will be week 6) following a fall. She has always been a little forgetful - usually going through half a dozen names before she gets to yours; but now she thinks Grandad is still alive and asks people to make sure he gets his dinner. He died in 1987.

It’s horrible and horrifying to know that, as Mum said on her return, ‘the spark has gone’, that ’she is not there anymore’ and that ’she has given up’. But… oh…

Whilst Mum was visiting with her brother and sister, Granny had an accident. They had a look to see if they could find a member of staff to help with clean up. No one about. So, they pressed the buzzer. 20 minutes later someone showed up (by which time Mum et al. had already cleaned her up) and the nurse that arrived wasn’t there to answer the buzz - she was taking sugar levels. She, however, found a cleaner to mop the floor.

20 minutes.

What if it hadn’t just been an accident - what if Granny had a major problem, or had fallen down or any number of things?

20 minutes.

What if Granny hadn’t had visitors at the time? It makes me feel sick to my stomach that my beautiful Grandmother is being left in this position.

So, yeah, Club Day may have been fabulous but I just wasn’t feeling it this year. There has got to be more - a return to the glory days… whenever they were!

Okay so this Friday the 13th was… interesting. First the good - the polo shirts for the Scout Group finally arrived and damn they look good! This logo soon to be appearing in a store near you. Honest. The smug look on my face is the sweet knowledge that I did something right for a changed.

Polo shirt arrival

But this was at the end of the day. AFter I saw this…

Cheeky Bastards

Yes, it is Club Day time again, and this year they are reminding people with bad, hastily put together posters, pulling photos out of the archive and… woh, those photos look familiar…

Bad composition, backs of people’s heads… They look like… NO, they are mine !

MINE!

From Flickr!

And is my name on it? Like the extremely fair Creative Commons license asks?

Is my left arm 50 foot long?

Annoyed? Me? Oh yes! But why? They could have chosen ones from last year instead of the year before! 2007 was better camera, better light, better angles… I mean, still crap but… better crap.

So, tomorrow I go to take more better crap photos so that they can end up on a terrible TERRIBLE poster next year.

It had been announced rather fortuitously that ‘win or lose’ there would be an open-top bus parade with the Kirkham & Wesham team to celebrate their already fantastic season (promotion to Vodkat League 1 and winning the Division 2 League Trophy). Just as well they won then !

I true Kirkham fashion no one had a clue what time it actually started - sources reporting kick off times from 5:30 - 6:30, but one thing was fairly certain - at some point the roads would be shut off so I got the train home. Hmmm… As I was coming off the train some silly little chav-tart swung her rucksack onto her back, whacking me in the face. I felt something sharp hit and noticed the bag was covered in keychains and badges. The resulting cut bled until I got into town. Thank God Mum always told me to carry a tissue with me.

Anyway, the town was starting to fill with people… and cameras. The press was out in force as were the TV cameras for the local news reports. They took so long getting their various shots that the parade moved off late but not before this idiot

The amost annoying git in the world

had the opportunity to sell a load of airhorns to children. Children! These things were everywhere and so annoying that a few people went home before the parade went pass, and with my ‘quick to anger’ mood swings at the moment I was ready to throttle parents and children alike. There was no need for them and these items have no place in a small town celebration. Rant over.P5120034.JPG

Anyway, the bus finally pulled away at 6:45 and had to race through town, but at least it was nice to see the lads get the recognition they deserved for a moment. One hopes we get these crowds again on Club Day in a month.

Just

WIthout the air horns.

Tomorrow a new shop opens in Kirkham .

It’s about the size of a garage and expects to have about 2-5,000 customers in one week.

Tomorrow at 11am (not early risers then) the new Kirkham & Wesham FC Shop opens…

Kirkham FC Shop

…for one purpose and one alone. To sell tickets for the FA Vase Final on May 11th, 2008 at Wembley (a day on which I can GUARANTEE my post will be late, or a meme) against the ‘lucky’ Lowestoft Town

Feelings are running high and people are planning to queue form quite early. All the other shops are worried/ excited about crowds… If it’s not raining I may pop down with the camera to see what it’s like.

Seriously the most exciting thing to happen in Kirkham since… forever.

Why is it whenever I am not in the mood to go out I have a good time? It was he turn of the Scout New Year’s Meal today. Yes, I know that New Years was nearly four weeks ago but, well,, that’s just the way we roll.

We went to Cube in Kirkham - a place that I had heard both good and terrible things about, but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. the service was excellent, food plentiful, hot and tasty; and the drink prices very very reasonable. All in all very good quality.

The conversation on our table drifted through a number of weird and wonderful topics including how many balloons would it take to lift a wine glass? Then how many balloons would it take to float the kids away? And finally what the hell was the fruit on top of the desserts called? Yeah, no one took a photo of it because no one had a camera. but it was small (about the size of a big grape), yellow think unripened tomato yellow not lemon yellow), had long thin leaves on top and tasted like a slightly sour kiwi fruit. Any ideas?

Anyway, a good time was had by all - far better than the god awful time we had last year. Will definitely be going there again! And now to bed for there is a place I will be visiting in the morning called… work!
