I’m not ‘boring’. I’m English.
You Think You’ve Got Problems?
Hi, my name is Bec and I am a Southerner who lives in the NorthWest
I live in the North of England, but am a Southerner by birth – meaning I have, apparently, a side to choose. On Wednesday (I can’t believe it was only two days ago) a Government Thinktank – Policy Exchange - released a report saying (link to pdf of report) that some Northern cities were ‘beyond revival’ and people should move South to stop them being trapped in ‘poor’ areas. It was basically a bitching session about regeneration plans not going so well.
This, of course, being England, has once again kicked off the old ‘North vs South’ divide. The lines are being drawn up and local news crews are trawling the streets looking for well… locals… to be indignant. This, being North West England, means we have to put up with idiots dribbling on about cloth caps, Blackpool, Liverpool being the damned City of Culture (oh so very sick of this being mentioned at least twice in every news report), the Beatles, how all Southerners are unfriendly evil money grabbing toffs as opposed to the ‘give you the shirt off their back’ common man-iness of the North West (where?!), and how the NorthWest is the most beautiful area of the country.
I… am flumoxed. I have lived in both the North and South… people are just people for God’s sake. Things are the same whereever you go – everyone is suffering, everyone feels joy, everyone has crime, everyone has achievements and wonder… We all live in the same damned country so why, now I sound like a soft drink commercial, can’t we all just get along?
I like both ends of the country for different reasons. Here it is cheap and slow and relaxed (sometimes a little too relaxed) and the accents aren’t awful… and the South is exciting and friendly and inviting and… Both ends have got their problems – but right now the biggest problem the NorthWest has (I can’t say about the NorthEast because… well… I don’t see their news) is the people who were born here and have never lived anywhere else thinking everywhere else is awful.
I’m making no sense.
Update: This should have been posted ages ago but the blog and my brain have been down on and off all day! Sorry!

as you know i (like you) was born in the south and have since moved steadily north. I have to disagree with you on the temperament of the people. in my experience and i can only talk of my experience people are calmer, more chilled and (apart from chavs who are bad everywhere) considerably more polite than down south, Hell before i moved up here it was unheard of for strangers to say “good morning” as they past me in the street. When it happened for the first time i was so shocked i almost stopped there and then a bemused grin on my face. So north vrs south i voted with my feet and moved to the north

As you know I’m a Southerner, but I have lived in the North too. I don’t think people are so uppity where I live but I do think that people in London are a little up their own arses on occasions (trying to be diplomatic here – failing badly!). I agree with you, we’re all people and we should all at least try!
Penelopes last blog post..That Friday feeling.

North Yorkshire is the most beautiful area of the country. Apparently, the people of Kent don’t like this to be pointed out.
Sometimes my brother has to go work down south for a week or so at a time. He’s always so very glad to come back north.

Neil – I get a good morning, a smile or a nod everywhere I go – I had a little moment of fear when I went to London recently having not been dahn saff for a while – but as soon as I stepped onto the warm ground I got a ‘lovely morning isn’t it?’ I am in no way saying Northerners are not friendly… I think it’s my accent that gets the little friction…
Penelope – It’s the London Superiority thing – Capital City Complex… Where I lived (Surrey) we had the ‘not living in the city’ snobbery but nice about it.
yorksdevil – Ah, you see to me there is no where more beautiful than the area around the Hogs Back in Surrey… I’ll fight with you on the beaches, meadows, hills and dales but neither of us would win. England (the green bits) is all beautiful… and we should try and turn the not so green bits into something to be proud of now instead of trying to one up all the time.

No. The South is Evil. End of argument.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the north north devide recently (war of the roses and all that). I feel a post brewing about it once I formulate my thoughts.

Dan – wasn’t the War of the Roses more East vs West or am I getting that all kinds of mixed up? I look forward to your post!
