Avon Calling.
I have a question.
I’d better explain myself first.
My Avon order arrived today - new two-tone nail varnish and some of that cream which makes my feet feel lovely… and a free gift (hurrah). I was also expecting a new bra/briefs set that I bought in a fit of girlishness, and because the bras just fit well. But only the bra arrived.
This is the bra.
Now, my weirdness - normally I don’t care what I wear (yes, occasionally I get nuts about it but most of the time it’s whatever I grab first) but when it comes to underwear… it has to has to has to match. I think it comes from the old ‘wear clean underwear in case you get run over by a bus’ thing. And the thing - well, the briefs didn’t come with the order - they are in the dreaded ‘to be sent’ box. Now, I know I will be getting them… eventually, but now it means having to wear something with them that doesn’t exactly match.
With my favourite bra of the moment…

… I wear a turquoise pair of undies with it when the matching pair are in the wash, and with my favourite non-Avon bra (even though this is one of those where the strap falls down. A lot.)…
…one of my many pairs of black knickers…
But with the strawberries? A pair of white would look too Liv Tyler in Empire Records, and a pair of red? Actually, I don’t own any red underwear. Oh no.
Does this mean I’m going to have to go underwear shopping? Oh no. The torture.
The question? Does anyone else have this with sets of clothing? Or do you think it’s okay to go non-matching? Do you have any clothing weirdnesses?

It so absolutely has to match. If not same set then at least same colour and fabric. lace with lace. Cotton with cotton. Don’t care that I live in jeans and t’s - the underwear must be sweet!

I’m surprised that you’re familiar with the phrase “Avon calling.” I remember the commercials from when I was little but would have thought they’d quit playing by the time you were born. (Well, I’m surprised they’re in the UK.)
In the commercials you’d hear a door bell (ding-dong type not a buzzer) and then a woman would say, “Avon calling.”
You haven’t seen one, have you?

lia - yes! See? Just the justification I needed to go shopping! Lia said it’s okay!!!
delmer - Never seen an advert with ‘Avon calling’ in it, but I think it’s such a part of the cultural vernacular… ooo, and it was on Edward Scissorhands! Yep, there’s my stupid quotient for the day! I am however now bobbing over to YouTube to try and catch an ad. Someone MUST have uploaded one!

My underwear and bra are completely and totally predicated on what I am wearing over top. They don’t match or if they do it’s got nothing to do with anything. Function over style.
Although I do love the strawberry bra.

Nat - the only time that the top in any way effects under’s for me is if I’m wearing white. Then it’s all white. Oh, and my other rule about white underwear - never under dark clothes. Just in case there is an ultraviolet light about - you never know where the snaky buggers will show up!

I like them to match. However, I am a very plain underwear person - black or white or tan (is it possible to be more boring?) so most of the time they match by default. You got some sexy lingerie there, hon. I am impressed.

That strawberry bra is adorable! But I only wear undies like that if that’s ALL I’m wearing. Underneath clothing, they must be as invisible as possible. Smooth, sleek and preferably beige/tan/nude in color. Also, I do not own any underwire bras. They are torture devices that I cannot tolerate.

Selma - These are my ’shiniest’ bras - I have the obligatory plain ones but I wear the others when I need a little lift (in head, not boobage!) and that’s quite often these days!
SJ - I have to have the underwires for the shaping and lifting - otherwise they’re all over the place!

Oooh gorgeous undies!! My “top tip” (because I always have to be matching) is that I buy 1 bra and 2 thongs in each set, that way I can still match on day 2 - not that I’m obsessive about matching, or anything….much ;o)

Penelope - Now that, my dear woman, is about as close to genius as you can get at this ridiculous time of the morning!

I enjoy the symmetry of a matching set over the clutteredness of a not matching set. I’m gingerly stepping around the massive temptation to say something crass like ‘I prefer what goes in to those things rather than what covers them up’ but as a bloke it’s hard not to say that.

contractingout - I congratulate you on on not being crass. Not that I have anything against a little crass-ness here and there!
