Cheeky Bastards
Okay so this Friday the 13th was… interesting. First the good - the polo shirts for the Scout Group finally arrived and damn they look good! This logo soon to be appearing in a store near you. Honest. The smug look on my face is the sweet knowledge that I did something right for a changed.

But this was at the end of the day. AFter I saw this…

Yes, it is Club Day time again, and this year they are reminding people with bad, hastily put together posters, pulling photos out of the archive and… woh, those photos look familiar…
Bad composition, backs of people’s heads… They look like… NO, they are mine !
MINE!
From Flickr!
And is my name on it? Like the extremely fair Creative Commons license asks?
Is my left arm 50 foot long?
Annoyed? Me? Oh yes! But why? They could have chosen ones from last year instead of the year before! 2007 was better camera, better light, better angles… I mean, still crap but… better crap.
So, tomorrow I go to take more better crap photos so that they can end up on a terrible TERRIBLE poster next year.
Not long ago someone sent me an e-mail with a photo that had been doctored and used to win a contest his company had run. In the mail he asked if the photo was one I’d taken and if my boys and I were fans of the product his company sold.
As it happens, the boy and I are big fans of the product his company sells (we can get similar product at the local store for $5.00 or less (which I think is something like 50p these days) and I thought he might be considering sending us free samples — you know, since a photo had been borrowed from my site, doctored, and used to win a prize.
I don’t mind that the photo was nabbed without permission and against the copyright I’ve posted. And I honestly don’t mind that the next mail from the guy tried to sell me stuff. It’s just that I thought *that* was kind of cheeky.

Last year there was a big brouhaha over the company called Virgin Mobile, and it’s snatching of a photo from Flickr and then using said photo in a huge overseas ad campaign. The photo was from a teen who had started taking pictures as a hobby, and she and her parents were quite upset about not having been asked about VM using the photo, compensation for the photo, etc… I never heard what had happened with it, but your post reminded me of it.

You should most definitely sue the arse off whoever made that poster. Does that logo suggest there are two scout groups in Kirkham? I never realised it was so big as to need more than one.

delmer - okay, now THAT is cheeky. He cold have at leat given you free stuff!
Blondefabulous - I remember the Virgin Mobile thing - I think they ended up buying her off quietly… which is what usually ends up having!
yorksdevil - I’m not angry enough to be throwing suits made of law. Just miffed, There certainly are two groups in Kirkham - us and 1st Kirkham & Wesham. The funny and confusing thing is we used to be 1st Kirkham and then there was a re-organisation of the names and… oh, ancient history. The major difference is we rock and they really don’t!
