This thing about the NHS being the world's third largest employer isn't actually true. The latest figure for the NHS is 1.3 million, but Wal-Mart employs 1.9 million.

It's not Dan's fault as there is a Times article (from 2004) which makes that claim.

Selma - Ooo, 'I have a rash'. I might have to use that next time! Always leave 'em guessing!

Every time I go to the doctor I run into an acquaintance too. They always want to know why I'm there and proceed to overwhelm me with information re. their condition. So now I just say in a whisper: "I have a rash" and lower my eyes. It works every time.

Glad to hear that every now and then the NHS comes through!

Dan - It's all about one step up at the moment. One step is good. It means I'm not standing still!

It's really the third largest employer? Under normal circumstances I would insert a joke about not being able to see a doctor ever - but I am liking the NHS right now, so will refrain and be amazed!

You seem to have found a good GP. Cling onto her!

Glad things look to be improving slightly.

The NHS is the third biggest employer in the world, behind the chinese army and the indian railroad.

kapgar - Who else am I going to tell? Should take about two - three weeks...

NHS is the National Health Service - paid for by our National Insurance (taken from wages along with Income Tax) as a guarantee that free medical is available to everyone in this country (unless it's a dental problem... or you require medication - fixed fee of £6.85 per prescription). It's the reason most people in this country don't have private medical insurance and the biggest thing we whinge about other than football and the weather.

It is nice to find a person who actually gives a damn, isn't it? It makes things like doctor's visits that much easier. Keep us informed of what results, will ya?

What is NHS?
