Learning to Love Hanks.

It’s my prerogative, No, this is not an ode to that Bobby Brown song but an notification of a potential changing of my mind. I have free will. Deep breath. I can (just about) admit I might be wrong…

About Tom Hanks.

I have blogged in the past about how I would like to slap the shit out of him just for being him, and how I will pretend he is someone else when I watch the films he is in (for he is in everything) and just generally about how he irritates the ever living crap out of me.

But.

I will, in the new year be taking myself off to the cinema to pay money to see a film he is in - Charlie Wilson’s War. There is really only one reason for me to do this - Aaron Sorkin wrote the script and the man is my Personal Jesus. Imagine my horror when I saw Hanks in a staring role. This, normally, would be enough to steer me into another film - anything. Even something starring Jessica Simpson and her ilk. But nothing, nothing is going to stop me seeing it.

Nothing.

So, I came up with a plan. Watch his movies again and just let it all go. You’ve Got Mail was up first last night and then Sleepless in Seattle was on one of the cable channels tonight. See? When I come up with a plan, the TV companies schedule round me! And, do you know what? They weren’t all that bad. In fact, they were quite… gulp… enjoyable. Yes, I know they’re meant to just make you feel good and are cheesy puff films or whatever else you cynical film freaks want to throw at me but… Green Mile. I like that… Da Vinci Code wasn’t bad (at least the film was more watchable that that pile of crap book). I loved Philadelphia. I will never, as long as I live enjoy Forrest Gump or Saving Private Ryan (except for the first 20 minutes) and (I know it’s almost sacrilege to admit this) Toy Story and it’s sequel can just gather dust on the shelf. But the rest? I’ll give them a go… Next the earlier stuff - the Hanks Classics - Turner & Hooch and Big.

And then after that I’ll try tackling another one on my ‘annoying’ list. Another Tom. Cruise.

Don’t forget “A League of Their Own”. And you don’t like Forrest Gump?

You must really love Cast Away. Road to Perdition is pretty good.

As for Mr. Cruise, most of his films are the same film with different dressing. Top Gun, Days of Thunder, A Few Good Men, etc. are all the same film! His good film is Collateral.

I was going to say, you must watch “Castaway.” He’s not playing himself in that one. Also, I LOVED “The Terminal”!!!

But I’m with you on “Forrest Gump” — great music, movie sucked smarmy ass. And “Saving Private Ryan” was the most over-hyped snorefest in cinematic history.

Avitable - How could I forget League?! My dislike for the Gump is complicated. It has to do with Hanks and… well… now i’m tyring hard not to dislike him anymore… I’ll watch it again and see… but I’m promising nothing and I will be hitting the fast forward button through the box of chocolates moment. Ugh,

yorksdevil - Castaway is great! To sleep through! As for the Cruise = I’d agree with you except for A few Good Men - one of my favourite films as it’s written by the Lord Sorkin - ‘You want answers?’ ‘I want the truth!’ ‘You can’t handle the truth!’ Chills.

SJ - See Avitable! SJ agrees with me! Oh SJ - you really are a god aren’t you? i hates Saving Private Ryan - explosions good - Hanks and co dribbling and walking? Not so much!

Dan - Batchelor Party? Is it of the ‘Big’ type? I’ll give it a go! It’s going to be less than 2 hours right?

Dude - let’s not get crazy.

Tom Hanks is a softie.

Tom Cruise ditched his wife for that little Cruzy tart.

Miss Britt - I have been searching my mind trying desperately to remember why I hated Hanks in the first place. I think it has something to do with The Oscars but, like most irrational things… who the hell remembers anymore?

IF I get round to dehating Cruise it will be a long struggle. There are so so so many reasons to dislike the little bastard. Can’t even look at him without wanting to smack his stupid smiley face in!
